I am a very big hockey fan and I’ve owned just about every single NHL released game between the years of 2000 and 2016. After playing NHL 17 that is the breaking point for me and can confidently say that I will not be buying another EA, NHL game. The games have become too focused on realism rather than trying to make a fun video game.
So here comes Super Blood Hockey that just looks stupid in a great way. Graphically it looks looks like a 16 bit masterpiece that is made to be fun. Just look at the trailer, the linesman/referee drops the puck, immediately knocked over and blood goes everywhere. Then there is a gigantic hit and there is even more blood. This game just looks like the old school Mortal Kombat of hockey games.
With that being said, there is still hockey here. The point of the game is to score goals. You do this by passing the puck around, going for one timers and scoring on rebound goals. Also just like other hockey games there will be classes or player types. So there is going to be a “Sniper Class” and the Sniper Class is the goal scorer, they finish the plays off by scoring goals. The second class is the “Playmaker Class,” playmakers are the offensive catalysts. They usually are skating around with the puck and looking for the best opportunity to make a pass so they’re usually great passers. Finally there is the “Enforcer Class” and enforcers do one thing, play physically. They hit and they fight.
Even though there are these player types, individual players will have different ratings and the ratings are broken down into 6 skills. Skating, Checking, Accuracy, Power, Fighting and Face Offs. It looks like each skills is given a rating between 1 and 3. To give a couple examples an enforcer may have a poor skating, accuracy and face off rating but have a high checking, power and fighting rating. A playmaker would have a high skating, accuracy and faceoffs rating but a low power, fighting and checking rating.
If you’re wondering, it looks like the teams are going to be national teams and from what I can tell, the game has Canada, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States. The games tagline is “Choose the lineup that fits your play-style. Whether you want to win with speed & finesse or with violence & bloodshed, there is a lineup that will compliment your tactics.” So presumably, each country (or team) will have a different play style.
There is definitely one other thing I have to mention about this trailer and that is the fight sequence and how great that looks. At the 1:00 minute mark of the video, if you look to the right. You’ll a player in Blue skate up punch the ref/linesman and just watching the ref slowly just sliding across the ice. There is something special about this and something I just realized that I want in my life. Yes, there have certainly been moments in a game where I wanted to punch the ref and this game is going to give me that opportunity.
All in all, for me this game is going to come down to price. I don’t know how much its going to be but if it’s in the $10-$20 range. This could absolutely be a game, I’ll pick up and have some fun with friends. If you are interested in this game, I would recommend following this on Steam.
As a bit of a side note, I found this one GIF online. I don’t know if this is going to be a real game mode but god do I want this to be in the final game. Its 50 vs 50 and it looks like pure unadulterated chaos.
