Kumite In Tennessee 2017 Preview

Kumite in Tennessee or KIT is a yearly fighting game tournament that is traditionally known as the first major tournament of the new year. Its an opportunity for players in the FGC (fighting game community) to start the year off right. I’m sure most players in the FGC, their new years resolutions are go to more tournaments and place better at tournaments.

Much like the rest of the FGC, KIT has been taking off and becoming more and more popular with every passing year. Just 6 years ago in 2011, it was a one day event and there were only 2 games. Tekken 6 and Super Street Fighter IV. Now this year alone, there are 458 people who have pre-registered for the event and there 13 games represented.

Featured Games

  • BlazBlue Central Fiction
  • Dead or Alive 5: Last Round
  • Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator
  • Killer Instinct
  • King of Fighters XIV
  • Mortal Kombat XL
  • Pokken Tournament
  • Project M
  • Smash 4 Wii U
  • Smash Bros Melee
  • Street Fighter V
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

I will admit that I don’t follow all of the games and all of the communities. If you’re a fan of the Smash community, I do apologize but I know very little about the games and that particular community. I primarily follow Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Marvel so those the games that I’ll talk about a little bit. I do enjoy watching Killer Instinct but its always scheduled at a time where I’m going to want to watch something else. Once again top 8 is scheduled at the same time as Street Fighter V.

The Capcom Pro Tour is over and we’re now in the off season for Street Fighter so in one sense it would make sense why people wouldn’t want to go to this tournament. Its a chance to take a break from traveling and grind at home and prepare for the upcoming season. On the other hand, this is the first major Street Fighter tournament since the major Street Fighter V: Season 2 patch. This change will not only change peoples opinions on character tiers but could also change the way the game is played. Its going to be an interesting year for Street Fighter and this is the first tournament to start things off.

  • *(There are players that are going to be missing either because I may not know them or because they didn’t pre-register).

It looks like its one of two options with this game, either players have decided to stay home, relax and learn the new season or players didn’t pre-register and we’ll see a lot more notable players this weekend. Either way, I would say its Punk’s tournament to lose. Sure it was previous season but he won the last Street Fighter V tournament.

Although I’m a much bigger fan of Street fighter V, I can’t help but notice that Mortal Kombat is looking stacked at this tournament. If you look at the stream schedule at the bottom here, its the main event and I think thats a good sign for Mortal Kombat.

Notable Players

  • Echo Fox| SonicFox
  • Forever King
  • Yomi| MichaelAngelo
  • mtl|Hayatei
  • Yomi| Forever King Jr
  • PXP| A F0xy Grandpa
  • cR| WoundCowboy
  • Circa| Destroyer
  • Noble|Dragon
  • Kitana Prime
  • NS| Footwurk
  • *(There are players that are going to be missing either because I may not know them or because they didn’t pre-register).

There aren’t many big names missing from this tournament, one gaping hole is obviously PG| Scar who has been on a tear ever since the mid summer patch. With that being said, Sonic Fox (who just recently signed with Echo Fox) is coming and he’s been the undisputed Mortal Kombat champion since Mortal Kombat’s inception.

Marvel is a special game to me, not necessarily because it was my technically my “first” fighting game but because it is my favorite fighting game to watch. There are snobs who complain about this game but the reality is, there is something beautiful about the controlled chaos of this game.

Notable Players

  • EG| K-Brad
  • KIT|Cloud805
  • FF| JoeyD
  • LVLG| Dragongod
  • UA| Terry Bogard
  • ANBU LvLG| Punisher
  • GOL| ranmasama
  • NB.DCB| ElitheCurry
  • NB| Dual Kevin
  • OmGiTzAndre
  • (There are players that are going to be missing either because I may not know them or because they didn’t pre-register).

The top 8 could be this list right here (minus 1 obviously). It’s really hard to say who is the favorite but gun to my head, I would say Dual Kevin, K-Brad or Terry Bogard.

Commentators & Stream Info

I was the UltraChen Tuesday show and the four did comment that they were going to KIT this weekend so as of right now, I would say the main commentators will be:

  • James Chen
  • Ultra David
  • Sajam
  • Tasty Steve
  • Kitana Prime
