The Game Awards 2016 Nominees and My Predictions

In case you don’t know, the Game Awards is an award show for video games and gamers. They have categories for “Game of the Year,” “Best Narrative,” “Best Independent,” “Best Mobile/Handheld Game,” “Best Performance” (which looks at the voice actor) and many more. I thought it would be fun to give my predictions of all the categories. I don’t want to start with game of the year, I think I would rather end with that so I’m going to bounce around the list.

Best VR Game

Now I’ve only played two of these games and thats Eve: Valkyrie and Job Simulator and I was very impressed Job Simulator. I am going to go with Job Simulator because it was very well received

Winner: Job Simulator

Best Action Game

This is unfortunately another list that I only played two of the games. These are 5 games that I wanted to play but just haven’t had the chance to play them yet. Battlefield 1, the story sounds very interesting and I want to play it and I will be playing it soon. I just have to wait for it to be sent to me. Doom, I loved. Gears of War 4, sadly I don’t have a good P.C. or an XBONE but I’m thinking about getting one or the other and will be playing this game. Overwatch, I really enjoyed playing the game. Finally Titanfall 2, it just came out and it just hasn’t come up in the list yet. I am going to go with Doom for this category. Out of these five games, I just feel like it has the best single player. Although Gears of War 4 maybe better.

Winner: Doom

Best Strategy Game

  • Civilization VI
  • Fire Emblems Fate
  • The Banner Saga 2
  • Total War: Warhammer
  • XCOM 2

I haven’t played any of these games. I’m sorry guys, I can’t work full time, do this blog and play all the video games. I wanted to play Civ but I just don’t have the P.C. for it, I didn’t hear great things about Fire Emblem, The Banner Saga, I don’t know why I haven’t played this game yet. Total War is the same reason as Civ and XCOM 2, its on my list. It just hasn’t come up yet. For this its a no-brainer, its Civilization VI. I follow the Civ reddit on a fairly regular basis and people seem to be in love with this game (minus the artistic direction).

Winner: Civilization VI

Best Sports/Racing Game

  • Fifa 17
  • Forza Horizon 3
  • MLB The Show 16
  • NBA 2K17
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 17

This was once my “go-to” video game genre. I played practically nothing other than sports games. I’m now discovering how weak the genre is and its sadly no longer about making quality games, its all a cash grab and full of micro-transactions. The only game on this list that I want to play is Forza Horizon 3. It looks great, it looks fun to play and most importantly its made for the user and it doesn’t fall under the “pay to win” formula.

Winner: Forza Horizon 3

Best Fighting Game

I find it odd that this list only has four games and every other category has five but it is what it is. I enjoy playing Killer Instinct and season three is just a continuation of the original game but with more characters. King of Fighters was a bit of a disappointment for me, I really like thirteen but I couldn’t get into this one. Pokken Tournament is just fun, there is no other way to say it. I really liked Street Fighter V but it did not have a good start and who ever is in charge of their Public Relations should probably be fired. Good gameplay but everything else is poorly executed. I think for this list, its Pokken Tournament. Its well done, the net code is great, its finds games instantly and arguably the most fun for more casual fighting game players.

Winner: Pokken Tournament

Best Role Playing Game

  • Dark Souls III
  • Deus EX: Mankind Divided
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt -Blood and Wine-
  • World of Warcraft: Legion
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X

I have only played one of these games and I haven’t even take the time to write it up yet. Its coming, I promise, I’ve just been kind of busy and little overwhelmed. I’m interested in trying Dark Souls out as a franchise but I’m not sure if I’m ready for how difficult it is. Deus Ex is actually the game that I did play and I just couldn’t get into it. The Witcher is a game thats on my list to play, I’m excited to play it. Just haven’t had the chance yet. I have never played a World of Warcraft game, no particular reason. Just haven’t done it and Xenoblade is a game that I’m curious but its so long. It would probably take me a month to beat the game and I don’t know if willing to put that kind of commitment into one game. This is a really tough one for me and I don’t really know. I guess I’m going to with Dark Souls just because the Witcher is just DLC.

Winner: Dark Souls III

Best Action/Adventure Game

I am in the middle of playing Dishonored and you’ll find out how I feel about it at some point. Unfortunately it may be a while just because I’m a little back logged with games and now Pokemon Sun/Moon is coming out soon so I’m going to be dropping everything and playing that. I want to play Hitman, I’ve just been waiting for the full game. Hyper Light Drifter looks great and I want to play it, just haven’t had a chance. Ratchet and Clank is one of my favorite games of the year and Uncharted 4 is arguably the best game ever made. I think its fairly obvious that I think Uncharted is going to win this game.

Winner: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Best Family Game

Dragon Quest Builder is basically a Mine Craft rip off. Lego Star Wars was well received but in opinion it was just another Lego Game. Pokemon Go is not much of game and it was basically a fad that came and went. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ratchet and Clank is a master piece. Skylanders is really popular among kids, I don’t have the interest in buying figurines so I can play a game but thats just me. I think it should be Ratchet and Clank but I have a feeling its going to be Lego Star Wars. I’m going to with Ratchet and Clank because I think its a great game for kids, gamers and even parents who want to play with their kids.

Winner: Ratchet and Clank

Best Mobile/Handheld Game

  • Clash Royale
  • Fire Emblem Fates
  • Monster Hunter Generations
  • Pokemon Go
  • Severed

I’m sorry but I don’t consider Mobile Games to be “real” video games. They’re not made with care and I don’t think they’re trying to make good games. Hands down on this list, the best game is Monster Hunter. I’m sorry but I don’t consider Pokemon Go, a video game. Although I haven’t played a monster hunter game, I do know this is a great game and deserves the award.

Winner: Monster Hunter Generations

Best Multiplayer

  • Battlefield 1
  • Gears of War 4
  • Overcooked
  • Overwatch
  • Titanfall 2
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

This list actually 6 nominees and sadly I have only played 1 one of them. As I have eluded, I do want to play some of the other games though. I have already talked about most of these games except for Overcooked and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. I think its going to be Battlefield 1. I know it has some glitches but the fact that they did something unique and create a World War I game and its fun, is a major accomplishment.

Winner: Battlefield 1

Best Independent Game

  • Firewatch
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • Inside
  • Stardew Valley
  • The Witness

I do want to try most of these games except for The Witness is an incredibly well made game but I probably don’t have the intelligence to the play the game. In the end, I think the game to win this is going to be Inside. People really love the story, the soundtrack/music, the graphics are interesting and well done and of course the gameplay.

Winner: Inside

Best Score/Soundtrack

  • Battlefield 1
  • Doom
  • Inside
  • Rez Infinite
  • Thumper

Of this list, the only soundtrack that I have listened to was Doom and thats because I played the game. I do want to listen to games like the Inside and Battlefield 1 but I don’t want to ruin it. I want to play and listen to it. Doom was an incredible soundtrack though. When the music started blasting, you knew shit was going down.

Winner: Doom

*Most Anticipated Game

  • God of War
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

People are freaking out and going crazy for all of these games but if you followed E3 at all, you would know that one game was talked about the most over all other games. That’s the Legend of Zelda game by Nintendo. I would say it was an awful year for Nintendo but this game really started to get people excited about Nintendo again. Then they announced the Switch and now people are slightly hesitant but mostly on board. As popular as the other franchises are, Zelda is a video game icon. All gamers know who Link is, not every gamer can name the protagonist of God of War, Mass Effect, Horizon Zero Dawn, or Red Dead Redemption.

Winner: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

*ESports Game of the Year

League of Legends and Dota are probably the two most popular games in the world. Go onto twitch at any point and those two are usually in top three among viewer count. Lets be realistic here, League of Legends is almost always number one by a huge margin. Because this is a user vote, I think its safe to say that League of Legends has this in the bag.

Winner: League of Legends

Best Narrative

I loved Uncharted 4’s story, it was so interesting with the pirates and the way they mix in history and fictional history with their own adaptions is very interesting. Someone with Naughty is clearly a history buff and know a thing or two. Now I’m not saying Uncharted is historically accurate but it skirts the line of accuracy and fiction enough to keep it interesting. Not to mention, I love the fact that its all about Pirates. I’m all about pirates.

Winner: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Best Performance

  • Alex Hernandez as Lincoln Clay (Mafia III)
  • Cissy Jones as Delilah (Fire Watch)
  • Emily Rose as Elena (Uncharted 4)
  • Nolan North as Nathan Drake (Uncharted 4)
  • Rich Sommer as Henry (Firewatch)
  • Troy Baker as Sam Drake (Uncharted 4)

Best performance is the award for voice actors, Uncharted has three in this category alone, Firewatch impressively has two and I have heard that Alex Hernandez is hands down the best part of Mafia III. Uncharted is a masterpiece and I look at Nolan North and Emily Rose and they did such a great job but they’re performance was on par with the other uncharted games. At the beggining of the game, I didn’t trust Sam Drake. There was something about him that I just didn’t feel right about. Little by little, I started coming around to Sam Drake and the simple reason for that is because of Troy Baker’s performance. Troy Baker is an icon and now thanks to him Sam Drake is now one of the memorable characters in the franchise.

Winner: Troy Baker

Best Art Direction

If this was a category for most realistic looking graphics, Uncharted 4 would win. It truly is a beautiful game but I feel like there is more to it. Just because its more realistic, doesn’t necessarily mean that its aesthetically more appealing. Abzu and Inside are very interesting because they’re both so well done but almost polar opposites. Inside is very dark and Abzu maybe one of the most colorful games ever created. In the end, I have to go with Firewatch. Its dark but light at the same time, its realistic but set in almost fantasy world.

Winner: Inside

Developer of the Year

  • Blizzard Entertainment (Overwatch)
  • EA DICE (Battlefield 1)
  • id Software (Doom)
  • Naughty Dog (Uncharted 4)
  • Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall)

I have talked about all of these games extensively throughout this post and I have to say that the best developer is Naughty Dog. They created a cinematic masterpiece but its a playable video game. Usually Naughty Dog takes about 2 years to create a new game, this time they took 3 years to make this game and the wait was worth it.

Winner: Naughty Dog

Game of the Year

Is there any doubt what game it is? Its Uncharted 4, there is nothing new I can say about this game. Above all else, I want this game to win because maybe it’ll get developers to start creating more linear games that are narrative based. Any more it seems like Video Games are being pushed towards open world, especially this current generation of systems. Its nice that a main stream studio is focusing more the narrative, gameplay and art direction rather than how big the games world map can be.

Winner: Uncharted 4

There are a few categories that I don’t have any opinion on so i left them out. In about a month, I’m going to look at all the games that i played this year and create my own “awards” show. So keep an eye out for that.

*In case you’re wondering, yes I do think Uncharted is going to win 5 of the categories that it is in.
